Hi Nicky,
Blow drying your hair properly is very important when trying to get volume but there are other things to consider as well. I will take you through the process step-by-step.
1. Use a volumising shampoo and conditioner. It really is worth spending the money on quality products from a hair salon. I have used salon products and products from the supermarket and I can really tell the difference. When I am working with a client, shampooing is a vital part of creating the look, especially volume.
2. Tip your head upside down and spray the roots with a root lift spray. Then put some mousse on mid lenths and ends and come through (again, use quality products). Blast the roots with a hair dryer in the opposite direction to how it grows.
3. Once you have removed most of the moisture, sit up and take a large round brush with natural bristles. Section your hair into 4 sections. Then, starting at the bottom take a one inch section on the left and the same on the right hand side. Tuck a brush under the roots with one hand and follow with the hair dryer in the other, nozzle down. As you work your way up you will need to lift the hair up at a 180 degree angle and tuck the brush under right up against the roots. With the hair dryer in your other hand, point the nozzle downwards and follow as you glide the bush down towards the ends.
4. You could backcomb (tease) the roots a little to add more volume and finish with a good hairspray.
5. If you really can’t use a hair dryer I would recommend using big velcro rollers. You should put them in after you have removed most of the moisture as described in step 2.
Some of the brands I would recommend are KMS, Kerastase and L’oreal. L’oreal would be the cheaper option and are still very good as long as you buy from a salon. If you need advice on specific products please ask me.
I will be adding some videos to my Facebook page so that you can see all of this in action at:
Hope this helps. If you have any more questions just ask!
